Or, like some lawyers(not every lawyer) do, they create an out for themselves and only apply the rules to others. He said when a bill comes to him, he will post it on the White House web site for five days to give "the people" a chance to read and comment on it before he signs or vetos. Nice idea. I hope he does it with this piece of legislation. It is one of the most influential pieces of legislation, I think, to ever be created. It is going to affect lives generations from now, and may change our country forever, and not in a good way. Having said that, I doubt he will give "the people" a chance to really read what is in this thing. His back door will be, it's an emergency, and I have to sign it now. Just trust me. So much for transparency in this new presidency.

Here is a big beef I have right now though. I read this on the CNN web site and thought this was kind of setting up a bad presidence.

The vote by the Senate took several hours longer than a simple roll call of its 100 members generally would. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Ohio, attended a wake for his mother until about 8 p.m. Friday.

Voting began about 5:30 p.m. Then, the Senate chamber sat nearly empty until Brown arrived to vote about five hours later.

He was flown from Ohio to Washington on a plane provided by the White House, which said no commercial flights were available that would have allowed Brown to cast a vote and return to Ohio in time for his mother's funeral Saturday.

Now remember all the CEO's coming to Washington getting there tongue lashings from the Congress for using private jets, and they were basically told they should use commercial flights or other means to travel? Well....... I guess our government doesn't have to follow it's own recommendations that it has for how private citizens run their business, and they can do private flights any time they want. On our tax dollar dime, I might add. I know, I sound like a hard nose. "The man was at his mother's funeral. How could you be so mean. There was no other way for him to get back to Washington, vote, and then return for the funeral on a domestic flight."

Ya know what, CEO's have emergency meetings too. They have important and vital business to attend to, or have others that work for them that have business to do. Don't they have the right, especially since it is on "their dime" to use their planes how they see fit? Is this a case of "do as I say, not as I do"?

I think it is a case of " you hate in others what you see in yourself".

We really need to keep a really close eye on Washington D.C., and make sure they stick to their rules. Especially the transparency, the chance to read legislation before signing, and ethics.... Now that is another post I may get to sometime.

It's been a long time, but I have something to say now.

I know I haven't been here for a while. The GOP has released the items on the stimulus package they feel shouldn't be in it. I totally agree. The majority of this stuff will not create jobs and will not stimulate the economy.

$2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.
• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD's.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

• $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.

• $1 billion for the 2010 Census, which has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.

• $75 million for "smoking cessation activities."

• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.

• $75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.

• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.

• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into "green" buildings.

• $500 million for state and local fire stations.

• $650 million for wild land fire management on forest service lands.

• $1.2 billion for "youth activities," including youth summer job programs.

• $88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service.

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property.

• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

• $160 million for "paid volunteers" at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

• $5.5 million for "energy efficiency initiatives" at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

• $850 million for Amtrak.

• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.

• $75 million to construct a "security training" facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.

• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.
• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.

Please people, pay attention to what is going on. I haven't touched my blog since mid June.
FYI, didn't get any water in the house. The pump ran a lot for a while, but we stayed high and dry and got the freezers back in the basement. I decided to write something now because of some thing going on with the national media.

McCain has chosen a women as his running mate. This is incredible. History has been and will be made at the end of this election. We will either have the first black president or the first female vice-president.

News broke today that McCain's choice for his running mate has a 17 year old daughter that is 5 months pregnant. This is what I want to say to the national media:

BACK OFF!!! What is your problem? This very young woman has made a life changing decision, a CHOICE for you Democrats and Independents. She didn't have an abortion, she CHOSE to have the baby and is hoping to marry the young man who is the father. You keep harping on about what the conservative Republicans are going to feel about it. Oh, what a horrible thing. I think the Republicans will stand with her and support her in her decision.

Obama has even made a very strong statement that families are off limits. I hope he sticks to that better than he did about campaign financing.

But the media says, Oh, what else hasn't she told us? Ya know, McCain knew about the daughter before he chose Palin as his running mate. If you think you are going to find a squeaky clean candidate, you are living in a fantasy world. Everyone has something, big or small in there closet, including all of you at CNN, NBC, ABC, FOX, and anyone else out there who is waving an "Oh, my God! How can this be." flag.

This young lady made a huge decision that is going to change her life in a major way. She made a CHOICE. That should appeal to a lot of people. She has the support of her family. Hopefully she has the support of the father of her child and his family as well. I do not think this is going to affect Palin's ability to serve as vice-president.

Things happen. A persons integrity is shown and can be judged by what they do after things happen. That goes for Obama, McCain, Palin, Biden, and everyone else in this world of ours.

Rant ended.

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY! FLOOD OF 2008

Well, this has been a he** of a week. It started out all right, I guess. Was painting up in a salon in Cedar Rapids Monday evening. Was in a lot of pain the next day, but good work.

On Tuesday Marco Polo and I went to a gentleman's house to help put his air conditioner back together, and since he was so close, we went to the reservoir to see if it had gone over the spillway. It was inches away. It went over later that night. Thanks Army Cor of Engineers.

Then, Tuesday evening my neighbor who happens to be a deputy sheriff pulled up while I was out in the yard and said we, as in the town of Tiffin, would be getting some water and that sandbagging was going to start on Wednesday.

I live in a duplex type dwelling. Our houses kind of butt up to each other instead of side by side. Makes my place look like a free standing home on the corner. The other part behind me is several yards from this creek that runs the whole length of the street and then some. Usually it is rather quiet and is not much of a threat. Now there is the possibility of the Iowa River backing up into Clear Creek, then backing into this creek and causing a lot of flooding.

During the 500 year flood,(which by the way, happened in 1993. That's a short 500 years.) this area in which I live was still undeveloped. Now, with all the fill and the building and the additional building that Coralville has done. (note: the hill that was moved from the north side of the road to the flood plain on the south so they could build a Lowe's. Plus the mall and other business literally built in the flood plain, not to mention the Marriott) I fear that my street may be in trouble.

Many of us from town helped build a sand bag wall behind the houses lining the creek. Great stretching lifting, cardio and weight workout, but when my heart rate reached 144 I knew I had to stop or drop.

Anyway, the kicker to this is that I have a basement. Not a walk-in, a real basement. We have a sup pump that we recently replaced with a more powerful one, and it is keeping up with the rain water quite well. The problem is that I have two window wells in the basement. If the water starts going through the low place between my house and the house just north of us, it might just think that low spot in the window well would be a great place to go and make an unwanted indoor pool. (no jokes here people, it really isn't funny).

Soooo, I have been sandbagging and putting up plastic. The window well on the north end has coragated steel around it also so that might help. Major kudos to my work buddy Marco Polo who has been helping me in this endevour. He came up with the steel idea. I am hoping we won't have to test it out.

Now, the next job is to get the really important stuff out of the basement. I have two freezers. One if full of beef and the other has home grown chickens, some pork, pizza meatballs pies etc... Those are a priority. Washer/dryer, micro wave oven, actually two, one with a broken door handle, exercise bike, computer, video tapes, books and on and on and on.

I also have a generator to run the pumps in case of a power outage. Yes, I used the plural, pumps. I have a bucket with a whole lot of holes in it in the north window well and if water starts building there, I can pump it out.

My foundation is pretty high, so if I can keep the water from coming into the windows, I stand a real fighting chance. Some other things have been working in the city of Tiffin's favor as well. The Iowa river has a very strong flow and it seems to be literally sucking the water from Clear Creek. The other is not so good for Coralville. A levi was breached near 1st ave so the baseball fields and businesses in that area are getting more water than expected. Bad for them, good for Tiffin. The water can spread out more. At least quite a bit of the area there is baseball and soccer fields.

Poor Cedar Rapids!! Elis Island just looks like someone just dropped a couple buildings in the middle of a very large river. 380 is the only way to get from one side of town to the other. Highway 30 east is closed, 965 between North Liberty and Swisher is closed, Hwy 1 near Mt. Vernon is closed.... It is very difficult to get around.

I don't know how many people read this, but whoever you are, send up a little prayer for the people effected by this flooding going on in Iowa and pray that the rain will stop for a while so things can settle down. I would really like to keep my basement dry. Thanks so much. ;-)

I will try to keep all of you posted.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ramblingnelle.blogspot.com/2008/06/rain-rain-go-away-flood-of-2008.html' title='RAIN RAIN GO AWAY! Wendy's. Now, I really like Wendy's. They have great food, and good selection and I really like there fries.

Now I read that Arby's parent company has finally succeeded in buying Wendy's. Dave Thomas's daughter doesn't seem too happy about it.

They are a great chain, and have a great story behind there beginnings. I worry that they will loose there uniqueness or disappear totally. I would start going to Burger King before I would start frequenting Arby's or the golden arches of McDonald's.

Arby's is all right if all you want is variations on the same theme. McDonald's though, yuck. The last time I was there to have a meal I was really disappointed. I must say though, the fries are still quite good. But one does not live on fries alone. I'm sure you could, but I don't think I could stand it that long.

Wendy's burgers, Chicken, fish and salads are the tops in my book and I hope this will not change them out of existence.

WHAT THE BLEEP IS GOING ON???

So I am at work earlier this week and I get a call from Side Notes. Had I seen the article about the Englert sending a letter to the Johnson County board of supervisors about there concerns of Coralville building a performance space in there fair city. No, I said, but I will read it and check out your post.

WTF!!! I have also read that the Englert was asked for there input, but I agree totally with Side Notes that the letter did not sound like and expression of opening dialogue and more like a whining threat to force Coralville to not build the space.

ICCT originally pledged IN A CONTRACT an amount of 40K with an additional 10k. Along in THE CONTRACT was the agreement that ICCT would be the in house theater for the space and we would have a special price agreement. Percentage of ticket sales and concessions sales were included IN THE CONTRACT.

Later, when things changed and ICCT got shafted, for lack of a better word, the Englert started asking for that last 10K that was IN THE CONTRACT. If the whole in house theater thing was just an agreement, how did they know the amount. They said there was no contract. HMMMMMMMM.

After the Englert closed as a movie theater and someone was planning on turning it into another bar, I took it upon myself to e-mail all of the members of the Iowa City city council and inform them of the economic benefits of having a large live performance space downtown. It would bring wanted patronage to the local restaurants and hotels and it would give people a good reason to come downtown. I also mentioned the possibility of hosting an IACT theater festival which gets held every other year and in which ICCT had participated and won several times. This would bring in money from out of town and from across the state.

The Englert is a fine performance place. I really enjoy being on that stage, and I also enjoy being in the audience. I especially enjoy working with Chris ( you know who you are). You are a super tech person! But the whining has got to stop.

The Englert is there because of all the people ( not corporations) who worked there buts off to raise money, and the people who have there names on the backs of those theater seats. I have my name on one and my husband has his name on another.

It was meant to be a local artist performance space. Most local organizations cannot afford to perform there. ICCT is on a financial tight wire because of the savings they sunk into a place that they thought they would now be able to call home. A real theater.

Coralville and City Circle are no threat to you. Get over yourself.

And......... As long as I am ranting, what about this state wide ban on smoking in Iowa thing? The state finally passes a higher state tax on cigarettes to help fill the state coffers. (don't let them try to fool you into thinking anything else). And then they ban smoking in public places.

Now, I am not a smoker and I like the idea of going out with friends on a TTT and not have to come home smelling like an ash tray. But there is something about this whole thing that I really don't like.

This is a totalitarian law. Sure, smoking is bad for you, and maybe we can get some people to stop smoking and keep the rest of us from being effected by second hand smoke. But, what could be next? New York is trying to stop the sale of fatty foods. Twinkies really aren't good for you, should the state pass a law banning them? Are we going to start legislating when we should start wearing winter coats? You can only buy state sponsored bio fuels. Better make a law that doesn't allow alcohol of any kind in the state because it is bad for you.

Now you may say, the state passed this law to protect our health. I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure most of the state legislature doesn't really care about our health. This is just the state flexing there power muscles.

I want to end with a quote from Benjamin Franklin: Anyone who give up a little freedom for safety, deserves neither freedom or safety.

Bad Week

last week was pretty bad here in the Iowa City area. I'm sure all of you have read or seen the info about the Sueppel family tragedy. I really don't have much to add here, except to direct you to Side Notes for a wonderful writing she found through State 29 that he found on the PC site.

Yesterday I went across the street from my house to talk to a friend. She works at St. Mary's and does a lot of the singing during services. She is not handling it very well. We talked and I gave her a long hug. Told her if she needed to talk again, come on over. She knew the family. Doesn't understand how someone can snap like that, and has come to the realization that it could possibly happen to any one of us.

That is a frightening thought. I may sound like a fool to some of you, but I put my trust in God's grace and pray for strength everyday. I know that there but for the grace of God go I. I know, sounds corny, but that is what works for me.

That's all for now. Hope this week goes better.

JUST A LITTLE NERVOUS

So, once again eastern Iowa has been "graced" with another coating of the white stuff. This time it came down first as very wet snow. Now, it is starting to fluff up and the wind is picking up.

I have cleaned my driveway twice so far today just to stay ahead of the build up. And as usual, the city road cleaners dump a six inch pile of snow at the end of my driveway. Joy.

My reason for my being nervous, you say? Well, a couple weeks ago we woke up to the sound of the power pack on the computer beeping. Seems we lost power in the middle of the night. Not only that, we only lost one "leg" of our power. That means only half of our house had power coming to it. I know that doesn't sound so bad, but the half that went out was the one with the furnace on it. So my husband calls the power company and actually talks to a real live person and tells them our problem. The next morning, the repair crew came out and hooked up what I call "the box" to the house, so now we have power to everything in the house.

Still don't know why I'm nervous? The power has been blinking on and off several times in the last hour and a half. It's still snowing, with the winds whipping around, we are still hooked up to "the box", and I am just praying that the power doesn't go out.

The one saving grace? I have a generator in my garage. ;-)

To quote a comercial that has been playing on the radio in the state of Iowa:
"It's cold. It's real cold. And now that the holidays are over, winter just isn't cute anymore."

Update: the power blinked twice after I hit publish post. She is going to the La James school of cosmotoligy in Iowa City. She asked me if I would be one of her, how should I say it, guina pigs.

I am getting my hair highlighted at 1 on Saturday afternoon. Now, I don't do a lot to my hair. No perms or colors so there shouldn't be a lot of trouble there. The thing is, I think I am like the second person she will be working on. I'm a little nervous, but I am sure it will go well............
I hope.

Oh, I just read that Side Notes took a spill on the ice. Hope your head is feeling better.

Damn it! My spell check isn't working. Vernon, or if you live there, you will know of a grocery store that has been in the town for many years. In 1971, it was named Dave and Gary's. Then, later in 1981 Gary became the soul owner and changed the name to Gary's Foods.

It is unusual in this day and age to find a small grocery store in a relatively small town that is surviving, but this one is. Gary sold the store to his children in 1999 and they are keeping it a running success.

He was very well thought of in Mt. Vernon. Known as one of the "best business men you will ever meet". That is what a Mt. Vernon banker said at Gary's visitation last Friday at St. Jude's in Cedar Rapids. BTW, He was a charter member of St Jude Catholic Church.

Why am I talking so fondly of this man? He was my uncle. The youngest of four boys and one girl on my fathers side of the family.

He had a wonderful sense of humor. Always kept you on your toes as to whether he was pulling your leg, or not. Was very lucky at cards, and just an all out wonderful person.

It was so wonderful to see all the people who came to the visitation. The line was long, and the words from people where very heart warming. I learned some wonderful things about him that night. The funeral was a lovely Catholic mass. They have a very contemporary sanctuary that made you feel welcome.

I went to the internment at the cemetery in Marengo. Boy, was that cold. Leave it to Gary to have his funeral on the coldest darn day he could find. ;-)

So if you find yourself driving through Mt. Vernon, stop in at Gary's Foods. Grab a soda or some snacks. Check out the deli and say hello to Denny or Becky, my cousins. Lucy, Gary's lovely wife might be there as well. Pay honor to a man who, without a college education, created a business and reputation that shall last for years to come. I love you Gary. Rest in peace.

MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Just thought I would do something real quick so it doesn't say Happy Thanksgiving on the top of my page anymore.

Let's see, we have had a very very white Christmas this year in Iowa. We had a wedding to attend the Saturday before Christmas. We took pictures using the grooms camera. After the wedding we drove to a party and ended up staying a little later than we should have. Nasty snow storm that night. I walked to our car about five minutes after my husband and his prints in the snow where almost completely filled up with snow. Driving home to Tiffin from Iowa City was a bit tricky. We had friends who live in Mt. Vernon follow us home and stay overnight. Fun times.

I found out the middle of the week before Christmas that a dear cousin of mine, Brenda, was delivering Christmas baskets to her neighbors and she dropped dead. Her daughter found her. She was already turning blue when she found her. I wonder if someone had been with her...... Anyway, she was three years younger than me. Always so full of life and energy. Really sent me for a bit of a loop. She lived in Utah, so I couldn't make it to the funeral. I haven't talked to her in a while, but I do have some wonderful memories of our times together.

Spent Christmas day with my husbands family. Are there any families out there that aren't going through some kind of crisis at the moment, or are they just hanging around me. It was a nice time, but lets just say not everyone was in attendance.

This Sunday we are having Christmas with my family that got cancelled because of snow last weekend. Just found out tonight that a good friend of ours is in the UIHC. He evidently broke his leg a few weeks ago in a fall and didn't have it checked out. His kidneys shut down. He is on dialysis to get all the toxins out of his blood. Complicating things is the fact that he has had heart failure and he had Polio as a child. Going to go see him Sunday morning before going to family Christmas.

I have a party to go to on New Years Eve. Really looking forward to that. I guess that is it for now. I'll sign off and wish all of you a happy and joyous new year.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. We here in eastern Iowa are getting our first taste of winter with a possible accumulation of 3 to 4 inches of snow.

I am heading out to Williamsburg to my parents house tonight. I, being the one to prepare the turkey, kind of need to get up early to get it started. My hubby is staying home and sleeping in our own bed because of his back. Makes sense.

I got the job of doing the turkey with my family several years ago because I watched Good Eats on the food network and learned about brining. My 22 pounder is now sitting in a concoction of vegetable broth, koscher salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, garlic flakes, and other herbs to give it tenderness and flavor. It works great!! You should try it sometime.

Anyway, I also do the dressing. (stuffing is evil!) ( to understand that, please check out Good Eats on the Food Network web site). One with meat and the other without. We have a family friend who is a vegetarian.

I also bake bread. Well, I have a bread machine. Well, actually I have three bread machines. They are all the same brand DAK. They don't make them anymore, but I think they are the best bread machine out there and they make really large loafs. I make a French bread that calls for two egg whites beaten to soft peaks. Really great bread.

So, I'm getting ready to gather all of my food. The turkey is in the brine inside one of those orange coolers you see at work sites. Dressing is done and ready to transport. Bread is baked and in a zip lock bag. I am also taking along a few movies that we might watch, some music, and clothes of course. No computer, you say? No Internet access at my parents house. Hey, they just got cable for the first time in there lives since moving to town a little over a year ago.

I think I've rambled enough. I hope everyone has safe travel and a very nice Thanksgiving.
Think about all the things you have to be thankful for and don't eat too much bird. ;-)

SNICKERS 1988-2007

I grew up on a farm where the cat was a bigger deal than the dog. Not that we didn't have dogs, we just had a lot of cats and we all really loved them. I always said I would have one of the farm cats as a house cat when I moved away from home.

The spring of 1988, a cute little calico kitten was born in a litter of about four. As soon as I saw her, I said, "That's Snickers and when she is old enough, I'm taking her home." Thankfully, she survived her first 11 weeks on the farm and I brought her home to a "big sister" named Katrina. They got along quite well. A few years later, we got a pure bread cat named Meetawn
(mittens, with an Asian sound to it) Three cats in the house, that made things interesting.

In the summer of 2000, we moved into our own home. The day before we moved, Katrina laid down on the landing of the stairs of the old place and curled up and dyed. I was heartbroken, but she looked so peaceful and content, I was comforted by that.

Now Snickers got sick about 2 1/2 years ago. I nursed her, took her to the vet, gave her antibiotics, bought special food so she could gain back weight, everything. She bounced back. She wasn't as roly poly as she used to be, but her eyes where bright, she was playing and eating and very happy.

Two weeks ago, Snickers finally hit a wall. I had been feeding her baby food for quite some time because she couldn't chew because of the lose of teeth. Now she wouldn't even eat off my finger. She would lay under my dresser in the bedroom and I would check on her to see how she was and give her water. Touch her, brush her, let her know how much I loved her.

Then this week she lost control of her hind legs. I tried to make her comfortable, but she kept dragging herself downstairs. Finally we laid her over the heat vent next to the kitchen table. One of her favorite places. I turned the heat up so the furnace would run and keep her warm.

Her paws were cold, and her breathing was shallow. I laid there with her for several hours on Thursday. Making sure she knew I was there, petting her gently, and again letting her know how much I loved her.

I had to go run some errands and do some work in the afternoon. I thought she might be gone when I got back. When I came back into the house, she didn't seem to be breathing, then she stretched. I bent down and was there with her as she finally let go. She would stretch and do a silent meow. She did that three times and then she was still. She was gone. Off to a yard full of catnip to roll in, grass to chew, and her sister to play with.

Now, you people who don't/didn't have a special relationship with a pet might think I'm a little too sentimental. I never thought of her as a person. She was always a cat, but she seemed to know things that people around me never could sense. When I was down she would cuddle with me. If I was sick, she would lay in bed with me to keep me warm. Or keep her warm, didn't matter. Her purring was a comfort. She loved to play, and was rather insistent in the morning about being fed.

That is why I included this little video. I hope it works. never done this before. It was sent to me be Side Notes a few weeks ago, and it really makes me think of my little Snickers.
I miss you Snickers and I love you very much.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v21.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D6fe225f0c4af9b52%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331570940%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6BA910DF06088EB9570A74D15FDA9854249DEF5D.52F40AFD666FAD66D649D04EA69BBEAF22FBE49%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D6fe225f0c4af9b52%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DFSAChU49JzqGueGoDMcZKRM4i94&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

The day after the election

Well, here I am sitting in the, well, used to be small town of Tiffin, wondering what will happen now.

We have a new mayor. Potter lost after 20 some years of serving as mayor of Tiffin. The sad part is that the voter turn out was piss poor. From what I got from the Press Citizen, only around 400 of our 2500 more or less populous voted. That is really sad. A majority of a minority is telling the majority how to run the government. Gee, that sounds like elections for every level of government, doesn't it? My motto is: I voted, so I have the right to complain.

The city of Tiffin also passed a 7% hotel motel tax to begin July 1 2008. WTF!!!!!! We have no hotels. We have no Motels. Hell, we don't even have a simple sit down or fast food restaurant. Well, we used to have a restaurant, but it burned down 8 years ago and the city didn't fight tooth and nail to keep the landmark Lark Supper Club in our town.

I also saw that the 21 only measure was defeated in Iowa City. There is something that can be done to solve this problem that nobody seems to want to address, except maybe State 29. Change the drinking age back down to 18 or 19. They are considered old enough to serve in the military, to go into debt, have a normal drivers license, vote in an election, why can't they have a drink? If you make it not such a 'bad boy/girl" thing to do, they might not do it as much.

Well, that's all I can think of to say about the elections. If I hear more, I might comment again, who know.

Better late than never, a Halloween post

Halloween has just past us by less than a week ago. I don't do much on that day. Lately I have taken to leaving the house. We have neighbors across the street that decorate there front lawn like some people do for Christmas. Ghosts, Ghouls, and all sorts of creepy crawlies. I think they just about cover it for the whole neighborhood.

Anyway, in the spirit of the holiday just past, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes from a movie. V for Vendetta seems to have been a popular costume this year. At least I saw it in several stores so I'm guessing it was popular. Anyway the V speech is one of my favorites and I think it would make a great audition speech or a warm up for any actor before a show. Gets the mouth working if you know what I mean.

Without further ado, here is V.

V: [Evey pulls out her mace] I can assure you I mean you no harm.

  Evey Hammond: Who are you?

V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.

Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.

V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Evey Hammond: Oh. In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

[carves V into poster on wall]

V: The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

[giggles]

V: Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Evey Hammond: Are you like a crazy person?

V: I am quite sure they will say so. I would urge everyone to watch this.

I think our education system is sourly lacking in the telling of this war. Ken Burns seems to make sure to cover all parts of the war that the US experienced. And not just the good stuff. Things like bad armor on the tanks. Vengeance killing of prisoners because of torture and death of Americans.
The internment camps for the Japanese in the US. Prisoners in Japan.

What is incredible and maybe totally unheard of in this day: Manufactures turning there factories over to war production. They only made 134 new cars during the run of WWII. The Ford factory could produce a Fighting Fortress, having over a million parts, every 63 minutes.

I intend to watch all the episodes. We should all watch this and remember the sacrifice our parents and or grandparents made during that time. We really have had it way easy.

9-11 and That Day In September

Six years...... I looked at the clock before I answered the phone, it was 9:30.
It was my husband. Did I have the TV on, he asked. I turned the set on and asked why. Because, he said, the twin towers had been hit by planes and both towers where gone. Gone? How could they be gone. I turned to CNN and they were replaying the collapse of the north tower.

My God! All that was left was a pillar of smoke and ash. The whole island of Manhattan was engulfed in this huge cloud of smoke, ash, and fumes from burning plastic and jet fuel.

The eeriest thing I remember seeing on the news coverage that day was when the dust had cleared and you could hear again the sound you heard was the chirping of the fireman's safety alarms. There were so many of these things chirping there warnings of danger. I just knew that a lot of those alarms would be on a lot of firemen who would never be seen alive again.

I remember all the paper falling, the people jumping, the buildings collapsing. After a while, probably in the afternoon, I stepped outside. What a beautiful day. Iowa had as blue a sky as New York City. How could God let something so terrible happen on such a beautiful day??
I just figured that out today. The weather was beautiful all across North America. That is the only way all those 4000 or so planes were able to be put to the ground in an amazing 3 hours. Saved a lot of lives that day.

We need to remember that day. The heroism that took place that day was unprecedented. The lives that were lost of those who where just doing what they did five days a week, going to work.

I will always remember September 11th. It is my Pearl Harbor, my Kennedy assassination.
I will always take the time, the moments of silence to honor those who lost there live that day because of human hate manifested and wrapped in the guise of religious fanaticism.

I am honored to be in the cast of That Day In September. To be able to share this moment in time with an audience and to get people to think... Thank-you Matt, for casting me. I feel that we honor the victims and the survivors with each performance.

Only two more performances to go. September 14th and 15th at Arts a la Carte at Old Brick in Iowa City. Performance starts at 8:00.

LABOR DAY RAMBLE

Hello,
I know, I've been gone a while. Just haven't taken the time to sit down and blog. Been reading my favorites though, so I know what you have been up to....... ;-)

I've been involved with a play that will be opening this Friday the 7th. It is called
That Day in September, by Artie Van Why.

Artie worked in a building right across from the World Trade Center complex. He was there on September 11th, and this play is based on his e-mails to family and friends that he wrote after the attack. It is originally a one man show, but Artie has allowed us to break it up into several different characters. Office drone, VP, teacher, cop, student, blue collar, artist and parent. The parent is the one I play. I like the idea because it shows that this day effected everyone in some way.

The writing is sometimes hard to work around because he wrote what he said and felt at the time, so grammar and such are more like how Artie talks. I have changed a couple words to make it easier to speak and easier to understand.

I have several lines that describe the attack. The first, about debris and such falling, and the second about the second plane hitting. Really want to get those right.

I really hope people will come to see this. I think a lot of us have taken this moment in our history and tucked it way back in our minds, to the point of almost forgetting it. Kind of like how some us think about Pearl Harbor. " Oh, yeah, that was a horrible thing that happened in our history."

Now don't get me wrong. I don't think that we should have it in the forefront of our minds all of the time. But, we need to make sure it doesn't get lost amongst our everyday living. It is a very important part of our history, and the impact that it had on us as a country and as a people needs to be remembered.

Anyway, It has been an exercise for the emotions, as our director put it on his blog. Therapy as it were. I've done something like this before with another show I was in. Death and the Maiden was a very intense exercise for the emotions also. The trick with these shows is not to let it "come home with you" as it were. Leave it on the stage. Feel it, but don't let it consume you. I always feel like taking a deep cleansing breath afterward and blowing it all out.

Dreamwell Theatre is putting this show up. It is directed by Matthew Falduto and will be performed at Arts a la Carte space in Old Brick, 26 East Market Street, Iowa City, Iowa.

Performances are September 7, 8, 14, 15, at 8 p.m. We will also be doing a piece from the show at the Iowa City Public Library on September 11th. There will be discussions after each performance and I do hope people will stay for it. We actually have a cast member who was in Washington D.C. on the 11th and saw the Pentagon at a distance. He experienced first hand some of the panic of the day in that city.

In other news......... Yes, I got Side Notes moved back to Iowa. She hasn't been able to blog lately because she doesn't have an Internet connection, but I just talked to her and I think she is going to try and post something today.

It was quite a trip back. Had some car trouble, or should I say Jeep trouble on the way back. Stayed overnight in Kansas City, rotated the tires, and that seemed to help.

Listened to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows through most of the trip. Yes, I have the book on CD. I have all of them on CD, and I love it. Some people have Star Wars, some have Star Trek, I have Potter.

Hey, State 29 is back with a new look and is allowing comments. That blog always has something interesting to read and I agree with some of the things he says as well. And as I stated in an earlier post, I will have a blog entitled State 29 is right. I'm sure that will make him/her/they very happy.

Well, I hope this entry kept your attention and that you will keep coming back. I am always checking my favorites and leaving a comment or two.

Have a great Labor Day. ( I have rehearsal tonight, go figure)

Almost Done

Got a chance to get on the web by using Side Notes lap top.

We've got almost everything everything in the truck. The big things left are the matresses. They have a fish tank that needs to be drained and the fish transported. There is a $50 fish in that tank, so they aren't the type that you will "dispose of before you move".

All in all. it hasn't been too bad. We had some help from one of the theater students. His name is Adam. Very nice guy, and really good at lifting things and tieing knots. He also has an awsome eagle on his back between his shoulders. There is also a Pheonix on the back of his right calve. Impressive.

Oh, the most important thing. The Brazilian steak house was excellent, as usual. The beef was cooked just the way I like it. The staff was friendly and very sociable, as they always are. They were even willing to put more meat on the flame, if we wanted more. How cool is that?

Well, I guess I'll get off of here so Side Notes can show me a few blogging tricks, and then we can get this packing finished. Later.

Helping to move............ again

I have a strange feeling of dajavu. I think I was down in Fayetteville Arkansas a year ago.
Yes, I was!

As mentioned on Side Notes, I am going to help my two friends move back up to Iowa. I helped them both move down there. All be it, at different times. One in August of last year and the other in February of this year. Ah, fun times............

Anyone who reads this, just please have some positive thoughts for us. First that we have more than just the three of us to load this stuff up, second, that we don't totally cripple ourselves for the rest of our lives moving this stuff. AND, that everything will fit in the truck.

I do get to eat at the Brazilian Steak House, but man. This is a lot of work for some good meat.

I don't know if I will have access to a computer for a few days, so I'll let you know how things went. Pray for us. One from my friend Bill, with whom I do theater with, and we do special effects for certain things. Like at the Hoover Museum for Halloween and we did some FXs for a show on Discovery Health. Anyway, it was a really cute card from Blue Mountain.

The other was from another theater friend of mine. Her name is Carol. She is a really fun person to be around. When you get a chance to be around her. Busy, busy, busy. When she gets going on her laugh, she snorts once in a while, which makes her and everyone else laugh even more. She sent me a card from Hallmark that was like these two manic rabbits screaming happy birthday and yelling about confetti and having fun, and cake, and whatever. Glad I had the sound turned down a little bit.

Got some cards in the mail this week. One from a family friend Charlie, and one from my parents, who for some reason forgot to sign the card. It made me chuckle.

This afternoon we are going to a baby shower for yet another theater couple, then tonight we are going to a performance at the Englert theater in Iowa City.

Pen V. Sword: And Evening on the Fringe
A double-feature of unforgettable theatre with Rage Theatrics & Dreamwell Theatre

Rage is doing: Your Swash is Unbuckled" Three pirate Plays by Jeff Goode
Dreamwell is doing Typing Lear by Greg Aldrich

I Have seen on of the three plays at the new play festival put on be City Circle last February.
Two chicks with swords dueling it out and some chick on chick action. I know the ladies and it is fun to watch. Looking forward to seeing what the rest is going to be like.

Next week I will be heading down to Fayettville Arkansas (Northwest Arkansas) to help Side Notes and her fiance move back to Iowa. I have helped them both move down there, though not at the same time. They have a lot of stuff. Hope we can get it all in one truck. Pray for our backs. The best thing about the trip is that we might be able to have a final meal at the Brazilian Steak House down there. If you don't know what that is, Google it and find out. It is a dining experience you won't soon forget.

Well, that's if for now. I have rambled enough for today. Think I will have cake for breakfast.
Hey!!! It's my birthday! I can have what I want.

Deathly Hallows

Well, I went to the bookstore Friday. Saw some friends. Recognized a few Potter characters walking around, got an autographed picture of Gilderoy Lockhart. My bracelet number was 282. The count down started and then the selling of the books and recordings started at midnight.

I thought it would take much longer than it did, but we where out of there and driving home by 12:30. I read about 7 chapters until I noticed it was 3:30 and decided I better get a little sleep.

I started reading again around 9:30 A.M.. Took a couple of hours during the evening to do some shingling and then finished the book about an hour ago. Then and only then did I cut the number bracelet from my wrist. Done.

I am now listening to the recording of the book. There is just something about hearing the story after you have read it. You catch things you may miss while reading.

This was an incredible work that J.K. Rowling has finished the Harry Potter story. I don't want to say anything yet about what happens in the book, because I have some friends who haven't read it yet, and I refuse to spoil it for them.

She really pushes you in this book. Suffice it to say, the world that she has created is at war and things are very intense. I need to digest it a while after listening to it and then read it again.

3 Days 1 hour and some odd minutes!!!!!!

I'm sure there are people out there that will think I am a little crazy, but I am laying here listening to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I am on disc 3 of the total recording of 17 discs. Trying to get it all listened to be Friday. Don't think I will make it. I really want to have all the facts in my head for this last book.

Read and interview with Jim Dale, the gentlemen of whom I am listening to right now. As I have said before, he is very good. He only does the U.S. recording though. The British recording is done by the actor who played Dietrich in V for Vendetta. Can't remember his name at the moment, but he would do a really good job as well.

It took Jim two weeks to record Deathly Hallows. The only information he is willing to give about the book is that it has a surprise ending. Well, DUH!!

I am so looking forward to getting my hands on this book I can almost not stand it. Still not sure as if I will go as anyone. I had two great suggestions from theater friends. Luna or Mrs. Figg.
Maybe I'll just go around and please the pants off the kids when I know who they are pretending to be.

Well, need to focus on my cd. I'll report more on Harry Potter later.

Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows

As I lay in bed writing this, I am listening to my recording of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as read by Jim Dale. He does a wonderful job reading these books. He is very talented and has wonderful voices for all of the characters. He has won a Grammy Award in 2000 for one of the recordings and he has been nominated twice. He also holds a world record for number of voices done in a book recording. I think it's Phoenix.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to seeing the movie. The trailers have been very good. They are having characters in the movie that I thought they might not use. They dropped all the house elves for Goblet of Fire, so I wasn't sure if they would have the thestrals. I will be sorely disappointed if Creature and Dobby the house elves are not in this movie. They play some vital rolls in the story.

The thing I am truly excited about it the book coming out on the 21st. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I plan on being at Barnes & Noble the evening of the 20th, waiting for the toll of midnight and the opening of the boxes of Harry Potter books. I have been to this type of evening for the two previous releases. It is so much fun seeing the children and adults dressed as there favorite characters. I have even surprised a your girl when I knew which character she was. She turned slightly pink, as Rowling would put it.

I reserved a copy a couple of months ago, and also included a request for the audio book on CD. I plan on reading the book all the was through, then listen to the audio book.

I know I am really going to miss Dumbledore. I was totally crushed dyed. Or is he dead? I have read some theories, but haven't seen anything that matches what I think. I think that Dumbledore is a Phoenix. At the end of his funeral service, his body is engulfed in flames, and when the flames subsided, there was a marble monument. I think he burned to ashes and will rise again. What do you think?

As I write this post, I just get more and more excited about the book. A little sad too, because this will be the last. Oh, Rowling has said she would never say never, but I'm not sure she will go back to that world anytime soon.

Maybe I will see some of you at the bookstore at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville. I would like to go dressed up but don't know who I should go as. Any suggestions???

4th of July on the History Channel

So I did some early fourth of July celebrating in Marengo on the third. Fireworks, music by Mid Life Crisis, and way too many beers. Definitely no parade for me this morning.

Started to flip channels on the TV and had the thought of turning to the History Channel. They are running a series called The Revolution. It is giving the history of the American revolution. I remember some of this stuff, but this is much more detailed and a heck of a lot more fun than it was in school.

Do people these days realize that we declared our independence on July 4th, 1776 but we didn't have a constitution or a true form of government for another 10 years. 10 years!

Freedom comes at a cost. These people went through great victories and terrible terrible losses. Sacrifice. Our country is 231 years old because of these people and future people like them. I hope there are a lot of people out there watching this show and being thankful for what we have.

Happy Birthday USA!!!!!

WHAT!! NO INTERNET?!

I do have a bunch of things I want to post on, but that has been impossible for the last few days since our server had a meltdown of sorts, and we have just gotten our connection back tonight. I have been off the web and e-mail since Thursday of last week.

I have never really felt like I was addicted to the web and to the e-mails, but when it was no longer available to me, I thought I was going to go nuts.

Now I'm back and I will have a few things to talk about in the coming days. Like:
My step nephews new wife's father and I went to high school together.
More about Isiah Washington.
Maybe one more comment about Paris Hilton. (that was it)
State 29 has really got it right on this one.

Just a few things to wet your appetite.
Now, I must go and visit my favorite reads and see what I have missed the last five days.
Later!
Oh, and feel free to comment. The writing is wonderful, very insightful. I always find something that I can really get into. But, right now I am a little frustrated with the powers that be at ABC.

Isiah Washington will not be returning as the very talented and strong ego ed Dr. Preston Burke. This was not his decision. He was told by the creator of the show,Sondra Rhimes, in a reported tear full phone call that he was out.

The decision was made by ABC Studios President Mark Pedowitz, Entertainment President Stephen McPherson, and Disney ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney.

ABC had better give a more detailed reason for letting Isiah go. I know, he said a word that revered to gays in a bad way. He also apologized, he apologized to GLAAD, he filmed a public service announcement for GLAAD, he made a public donation to one of his favorite charities. He did everything the network asked him to do. He even went to counseling.

I think it is unfair that he has lost his job and we have lost a great character over this. People are shouting about having tolerance toward people and there differences but then don't offer that tolerance to the people they are shouting about.

Isiah did a stupid thing, well two stupid things. But, he has gone the extra mile and then some to make up for it and he still gets the boot. I think it would be awesome if T.D. Knight would come to his defense and extend a hand to him. Nothing would speak louder than the act of the person offended offering forgiveness and tolerance to the offender. It would also be very healing for both of these fine actors.

Look, people are going to say and do stupid things. Comments will be made, but you don't have to take them so personally. You need to learn not to let these things control your life and how you see yourself.

This is just my opinion.

PARIS HILTON SUCKS!!!!

All right, I usually don't get real riled up about some things. But, this just cheeses me off.

Paris Hilton has been released from jail after serving three days. During that time, she wouldn't eat much of the prison food given her, her cell was too bright and cold for her to sleep and she spent much of the second day there crying.

They offered her house arrest and she has to wear an ankle bracelet and not leave her home.

Idiots. What kind of precedence are they setting with letting her do that? Would they give the average Joe or Joan the same treatment. Hell no!! They would say, "Suck it up! You broke the rules, now pay for it. Eat the food, or starve a little. You'll eat eventually."

I hope she was traumatized enough that she will start behaving herself. Yeah, I hear ya, fat chance of that happening. She plays on her "I'm Rich!" fame to get what she wants. I'd turn her over my knee and spank her little behind if I didn't think she would enjoy it. Or sue me. There is going to be a deluge of prisoners who will try the same tactic, you just watch.

*****************UPDATE**************************

Well, what do you know!? Other people were a little ticked off about this as well.
Seems like the judge didn't like the fact that the Sheriff seemed to skip a step in the move to let Paris serve her sentence at her three million dollar home. Namely , getting the medical release papers to the Judge for his approval. Reading the story on CNN yesterday, they still hadn't gotten to him.

She may still get out early, but at least she will have spent more than three days in jail. Ya got to be careful with that fame thing. She is a fickle friend. Sometimes she can turn on you and bite you right in the behind.

You must admit though, she handled it well. Yea, crying and screaming for Mommy. Oh, well.

My friend in the know, Side Notes, said something interesting. Paris tried to use her fame to get better treatment. Her little game didn't work, so she shouldn't be surprised when it backfired and got even worse treatment.

Oh, and they put her in a mental unit. What is really tickling me right now is that the star of the movie Justin Long, stars in some other very short films. His most famous line is "Hello, I'm a Mac." Which leads me to my simple pleasure.

I really enjoy going to Apple.com and watch the Mac commercials on the web. Yes, I do most of my computer stuff on a Mac. Right now I am on a Dell lap top, but beggars can't be choosers. I have worked on both, but I really like the Mac best. I just love these commercials. They are very well written, rather accurate on what they cover, and just plain funny.

Back to the movie Accepted. Lewis Black plays a burned out college professor who takes the position of fake dean. Black is one of my favorite comedians. He pulls no punches and nobody is safe from his barbs. One of my favorite lines of his is about soy milk. "There is no soy milk, because there is no soy titty."

Another of my favorite comedians is Christopher Titus. he has a stand up show called Norman Rockwell is Bleeding. He talks about his family, which is very screwed up. BUT, he was able to share it in joke form.

My family has it's own little quirks, but being able to laugh about it keeps me from falling into a blue funk and on a bunch of meds.

One final pleasure. Hersey's Treasures Special Dark Truffles. To my shock and surprise, there is a posting about my blog and he created a link to it.

This evening I check out my own blog and I see he has commented about my second entry.
It is now official, I have got a comment from someone I read. (no offense Side Notes, you helped me start this thing so you knew about it) I have also been linked. Cool! Now I really need to start getting this thing figured out and do some links and stuff of my own. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil Was soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Rpublic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:

The 30th of may, 1868, is designated fo rhte purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decoratin the graves of corades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

By the late 1800's many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and , after World War 1, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celabrated each year on November 11.)

On this day, we should put aside our diffences about war and honor those people who have taken up the mantle to serve in the armed forces and died in that service. They are doing and have done things that most of us really don't have the guts to do, even if we were pushed into a corner.

We owe these people much. Take a moment this day from your BBQ, your car race, your camping trip, or any other thing you do on a three day weekend and remember.

If you can, take some time to educate yourself of the sacrifices our men and women in service have given in war that allows you to be able to travel freely across this land, to be able to speak your opinion for or against any thing in this land. To worship without fear of being arrested or worse yet, hacked to pieces because of your beliefs.

I honor all those who have given there lives in service to this countries and other countries so people everywhere can have a chance to have the freedoms that we as Americans tend to take for granted. THANK-YOU!!

Just some thoughts before bed time.

I knew this blogging thing would be a little difficult to get started. Finding the time to write, having something to write about, and thinking seriously about the things I feel "safe" sharing with the world at large as well as the few friends that know about this little piece of the web world I have called a home.

Lots have happened since I last made an effort to speak. Went to visit some friends down in Arkansas. Had a really good time. Note: EVERYONE should experience a Brazilian style steak house at least once in there lifetime. SERIOUSLY!! Words cannot convey the carnal pleasure of having hunks of meat brought to your table on swords and carved right on to your plate. Yum. The bad news came later when we got back home and found out our friend didn't get the job he had for the last college year on a permanent basic. Sorry, that didn't make much sense, but it's late and I'm not going to fix it right now.

The Monday before we left on this trip, my best friend once again had his wife kind of flip out on him. Hated leaving and not being able to be there for support, but he has some other friends that have been and still are there for him. He is out of the house, staying with a friend, and hopefully he will take the steps he needs to to get out of this destructive marriage he is in.

Oh, the friend who lost his position in Arkansas? He had and interview at Cornell college in Mt. Vernon and got an offer right away. Up yours Razorbacks. We hates them. We hates them forever. Well maybe that is a little too strong. ;-)

Get this! I'm going to be delivering a sermon at my church on the 27th of May. Yes, that is this Sunday. According to the church schedule, it is Pentecost Sunday. That is when the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' disciples. See Acts 2 for more details. Not only will I be delivering it at one service, but two services. I know what I will be talking about, just need to sit down and get it organized so I don't ramble on and bore the congregation to death.

Well, that's it for right now. I don't know if anyone else will be reading this, but here it is, out here to share with the world. Maybe I'll comment at a later date about my favorite shows: Greys Anatomy or Heroes. Or about my excitement and anticipation for the final Harry Potter book. We shall see. Till then, Good Night.

Simple Pleasures

Sometimes you have these little things that happen during the week that don't really matter much in the whole sceme of things, but they sure can bring a little smile to your face.

There used to be a bread store in North Liberty,a small town near me. I would go to the grocry store, look at the bread prices, then head to the bread store just a quarter mile away and get what was equal to two and a half loafs for the price of one loaf in the grocery store. And this is fresh name brand bread. Those bread stores aren't run like they used to be, with store overstock and stail stuff. The bread companies have gotten smarter and realized people what people want.

Anyway, last fall that store closed, saying they were moving to a new space in Iowa City. They said it would happen in a month. I stocked up. (bread freezes rather well if you know how to properly thaw it later on.) So I waited. . . . . waited. . . . . . waited...........................................

Finally, last Saturday as I was running around I.C., I chanced a glance over where the said bread store was going to be. There, to my hearts joy, was the store, up and running.

It is Wonder Bread and Hostess. They carry Homepride and Beefsteak Rye as well as other breads. Cookies, Lord do they have cookies. Rolls, buns, cakes, english muffins... anyone with a gluten intolerance would pass out from overload. It is located at what was once known as Wardway Plaze, between Auto Zone and Dollar General. Go check it out. It's great!!

My other simple pleasure of the week: Chick fil a opened at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville. I think I first experienced the home of the chicken sandwich in Davenport at a mall there. Since then, whenever I make a trip up to Cedar Rapids, I almost always made sure I had a meal at the "Chick" in Westdale Mall. Now it is only a couple miles away. Going to have to develop some self control to not go there all the time. A grilled chicken sandwich with waffle fries and a diet Dr Pepper. Dipping the fries in mayo. ( I know, I'm a little weird, but it is wonderful)
Little things like that can make life just a little more bearable.

Now, all we need now is a Brazilian Steak House and I would be in heaven.

Well, it's a start.

Hello world!!!

After reading blogs for about 3 years now, I decided to stick my neck out and put my words out there in the universe. It has taken me a while to finally sit down and put something down on virtual paper.

The name of my blog kind of tells you what it will be about. Ramblings. I have no specific agenda, subject or platform that I wish to share. Just when something hits me, I'll try and sit down and write. Hopfully improving my writing skills in the process. Oh, and my spelling, which can suck at times.

The people I read the most are: Side Notes, Dweeze, Mathman, Law and Disorder, Space Monkey Leader, Matt, and shockingly State 29. These are all local(mostly) blogs and I know several of the people personally. I may be contributing to Side Notes sometime, if we can get the dang system to let me on the site.

I guess this is enough rambling for the first posting.
